Since I couldn't buy gas over the interweb at reasonable cost I went to a discount camping shop at Measham yesterday and had a look at the stoves they had. Found one that they weren't stocking any more and took the last one for £30; it is olive green too so doesn't look too shite! Two rings and a grill. As I unpacked it I told wifelet to have a practice working it as it would be handy for our camping holiday this summer. I got one of those contemptuous 'over my dead body' looks from which I inferred a camping holiday probably wasn't what she was expecting.

Box is now under construction, design being revised as I go to reduce cost - currently planning on doing away with hinges by having a slide-out front and lift-off lid. :D

Nice work, you can never have too many boxes!

And on that note, my next project. I'm cheating a bit, call it recycling, by using an old British Army box - dunno what it originally contained but equipment rather than ammo I think. Acquired from Forester, it is a good strong box with a steel band around the lid and corner brackets so it will make an ideal foot locker to cart all the personal kit to a game in. Keith had previously painted the outside in a generic army green/olive and as it is now scraped and worn I like the look so will keep it as it is. The inside is a bit mucky/wiffy/oily so I'll sand that all down and give it a varnish so that it will be suitable for putting clothing in. I'm going to have a search around the garage and studio to see what scrap battens and board I have lying around before buying anything - then to construct a divider and removable bits and bobs trays.

CW, I actually just took ownership of a box pretty much identical to this one.

The outside is the same as yours, except not in great condition, some of the reinforcing bands at the bottom have all but rusted away and will need replacing. The paintwork needs completely redoing, but is the same colour as yours. Also someone has nailed two runners on the bottom of which only one remains. I can't decide whether to replace the missing one or remove the existing one!

The inside however is in better shape than yours was before you fixed it up and has a built in prop for the lid which is rather nice. It also looks to have at some point had a tray or two installed in it as it has internal supports. No oily stains, but it could do with a clean and a revarnish. oh and the hinges a nice coat of smooth black hammerite.

The chest has a small WD arrow stamped on the bottom.

I also got a medical officer's chest. This is almost a cube and my lanterns fit it perfectly. Finally a way to transport them safely! Unfortunately the built in lock doesn't have a key. This could also do with a complete overhaul.

Work in progress, ably modelled by Inky as usual...

I've got a piece of Formica which I'll bond to the inside of the lift-out front panel to make a heatproof, cleanable and hygienic work surface.
I'm being a good boy and wood-gluing/screwing this box and resisting the temptation to wield the hot glue gun!

No wonder the handle fell off last time, looks like you've got a saboteur in your midst.

If you want any Brit' green service paint to paint it with, I've a tin you can use as much as you need from (not original, a specially mixed colour match), to help keep the costs down (same green as the STEN box in my picture I posted on this thread ^above^). I can drop it at your work place after 1:30pm this Friday if it's needed?

Ah, a very kind offer and now I'm torn - I have some RAL 6006 and Service Brown in the garage and was wondering which to use, so is it to be grey/green, brown or green?! To be fair, I ought to use my own paint as I have it knocking about - and thinking about it the first outing will be a public show in May in jerry kit so I guess that will be the deciding factor, 6006 it will be. Cheers though!

Brackets for sliding front now fitted.

But the green'll go with the grill!

No problem. Glad it's progressing well!

Project now done, I was surprised how much can be stowed - easily enough kit and food for two people for a weekend. I might have to put in some dividers as stuff sliding around inside might get very annoying on the car journey but I'll test it out for the next event and see.

Heh, not really On Topic for a 'Weapons Chest' thread but food is just as important as gunz. :D

Just to report the 'field kitchen' was a great success this weekend feeding two people - two evening meals, two full English breakfasts, plus far-too-many-to-count cups of tea. Cooked breakfasts were done outside the tent (didn't want the fat-splatter and bacon stink to ruin bedding, tent and uniforms!) with no bother even though it was wet low cloud, cold and a bit of a breeze. Evening meals were done inside the tent - bonus tent heating to boot. So easy at the event knockdown - disconnect gas, replace covers, sling in back of car. :good:
